About Trip

The newly opened Chandragiri Hill Day Tour affords you the opportunity to be one of the first to appreciate the Himalayan range from this unique vantage point. It's especially good for those who have limited time, but an unlimited thirst for adventure.

A 30-minute drive west from Kathmandu brings you to Chandragiri cable car station, where your adventure begins. A hiking trail adjacent to the station serves as your starting point for making your way through a lush jungle abundant with exotic plant, animal and bird life. Despite the steep ascent, you'll make the top in approximately three hours. This 2520m peak offers beautiful views of the Kathmandu Valley and striking Himalayan peaks such as Ganesh Himal, Gauri Shankar, Langtang, Everest, Kanchenjunga and more.

Set atop Chandragiri Hill is the famous Hindu temple Bhaleshwor Mahadev. Legend has it that Shiva's first consort, Sati Devi, sacrificed her own life at Daksha Prajapati’s yagna after Daksha insulted Shiva in front of other deities. Shiva, enraged with Sati Devi's death, carried her dead body on his back and walked across the world in rage. Blinded by his own fury, Shiva failed to realize that Sati Devi's body was decomposing and dropping parts at various places. Pilgrimages were later established at these sites. Bhaleshwor Mahadev temple is believed to be built on the site where Sati Devi's forehead (Bhala) fell. Hindu pilgrims still come to pay their respects.

Chandragiri Hill's other claim to fame is that it's reportedly the site where King Prithivi Narayan Shah, the ruler who united Nepal, caught the first glimpse of the lovely and prosperous Kathmandu Valley. One glimpse of the beautiful vista convinced the king to annex the valley into his kingdom.

For any or all of these reasons, you'll find Chandragiri Hill Day Tour to be a meaningful and attractive point on your Nepalese itinerary.

Beautiful Hike in Kathmandu

We loved our Chandragiri hill hiking experience with Rajesh! The hike was incredible, through peaceful forests and on top of beautiful hills. The hike was challenging but the views of the hills and the valley made it worth it. We enjoyed seeing the temples and learning about the culture of Nepal. We celebrated reaching the top of the third hill with lunch and a cable car ride back down to the bottom. The driver was good also and we would definitely recommend the whole experience!
