Kanchenjunga Treks

The remote, mysterious and untamed wilderness of the Kanchenjunga region has only been open to trekkers since 1988 and, as such, stands as one of Nepal’s most challenging and rewarding experiences for those with a hankering to truly get away from it all. Trekking in the area is only possible through officially registered guides and agencies, which means you’ll enjoy trails that are blissfully free of the kind of numbers that typically populate the standard Everest and Annapurna routes.

Reigned over by the majesty and looming presence of the world’s third highest mountain, the classic Kanchenjunga route courses through the homeland of the Limbu people, a fascinating offshoot of Tibetan culture who speak a distinct dialect of their own and practice a mixture of Buddhism, Hindu and animist beliefs.

The trek offers an amazing diversity of cultures and ethnic groups, a wide variety of flora and fauna, and an amazing landscape of scything rivers, countless waterfalls, deep ravines and high passes, as well as other 8,000-meter giants such as Everest, Lhotse and Makalu adding their own presence to the scenery.

Options for the trek include driving or flying to the local base of Bhadrapur and extending the trek’s challenge further by exploring either the northern or southern base camps for Kanchenjunga – or both.

Not that many years ago the Kanchenjunga trek would have represented a major logistical exercise involving a mule team, camping gear, porters and food supplies to last the entire journey. In recent years more and more tea houses have opened up along the route, making the journey less arduous and easier on the pocketbook.
